Thursday 28th January 2021. Maths home learning for Clee Class and Earls Hill Reception (Cygnets)

Today our maths home learning is going to be based on the Jack and the Beanstalk story which we’ve been listening to this week.

We are going to start by joining in some counting songs:

Today for our maths activity you are going to be estimating. Can you remember what estimating means? That’s right it means having a clever guess.

For this activity you will need:

  • a piece of paper
  • a pencil
  • some small objects (Lego pieces, blocks, coins, buttons, pieces of dry pasta, small toy animals etc.)

First of all I would like you to draw a very big hand on your paper; bigger than yours and bigger than your mummy or daddy’s hand! Like this one:

Now I would like you to estimate (have a clever guess) how many of your objects you will need to put on the hand to cover it. When you have decided how many I would like you to write that number down next to the hand.

Now can you cover the hand using the objects? When the hand is completely covered I would like you to count how many objects you used to cover it. Was your estimate correct? Did you estimate higher or lower?

Now I would like you to put your hand onto the paper inside the big hand and either you or your grown up draw around it. Now I would like you to estimate how many of your objects will cover your hand. Do you think you will need more objects or fewer objects? Write the number next to your hand.

Now you can cover the hand using the objects. When the hand is completely covered I would like you to count how many objects you used to cover it. Was your estimate correct? Did you estimate higher or lower?
