Music Statement of Intent
The National Curriculum for music aims to ensure that all pupils:
• Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music
• Learn to sing, create and compose music
• Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated.
At Holy Trinity CE Primary Academy, we make music an enjoyable learning experience. We encourage children to participate in a variety of musical experiences through which we aim to build up the confidence of all children. Our teaching focuses on developing the children’s ability to sing in tune and with other people. Through singing songs, children learn about the structure and organisation of music. We teach them to listen to and appreciate different forms of music. As children get older, we expect them to maintain their concentration for longer and to listen to more extended pieces of music. Children develop descriptive skills in music lessons when learning about how music can represent feelings and emotions. We teach them the disciplined skills of recognising pulse and pitch. Also, we teach the children how to work with others to compose music and perform for an audience.
Intent

At Holy Trinity our aim is to provide a music curriculum which will enable each child to reach their full potential in music, encourage children to enjoy singing, composing and performing and provide children with the opportunity to perform in front of an audience both within and outside of school.

Implementation
Our curriculum is centred around ‘Charanga’, a music-based scheme, in which the children learn to sing and play instruments. They also have an opportunity to develop an understanding of pulse, rhythm and notation.
We offer a mixture of teacher and teaching assistant taught lessons. The school receives high-quality sessions from outside agencies, including the opportunity to learn violin, drums, guitar and singing.
We have a well-equipped music room which enables teachers and pupils the opportunity to enjoy and explore a variety of instruments.
Impact
All children at Holy Trinity receive a broad and balanced curriculum regardless of year group or ability. Every child accesses all subjects on offer at our school. Teachers plan all subjects with clear progression of skills and knowledge, that we have devised as part of our curriculum offer, to ensure that all children access it at an age-appropriate level that ensures that children are learning key skills within music.
Children are learning to work both independently and as part of a group, ensuring skills of resilience and teamwork are promoted in this subject. Children are enthused and engaged in the wide variety of music activities.
Holy Trinity has a school choir giving pupils the opportunities to perform outside of school, within our local environment ensure our children understand its significance and place within the wider world and that these excite and inspire children’s thirst for knowledge and participation in this subject. Such examples include singing in Oswestry Town organised events, Annual Year group performances and a Shropshire Music competition.
