Friday 29th January Earls Hill Swans (Year 1) Maths

Today you are going to be sorting 2D and 3D shapes. You will also be exploring and creating patterns with 2D and 3D shapes.

Please watch this video.

Here are some pictures of repeating shape patterns that I have made.

Please make some repeating patterns using 2D and 3D shapes at home. Send me photos of your work on Dojo.

Here is a link to a game where you can practise completing repeating patterns.

Thursday 28th January – Earls Hill Swans (Year 1) Literacy

Please listen to the story again.

Today I’d like you to create a story map of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. This video will explain more.

Please read a Bug Club book to your grown up today

Practise reading the Red Tricky words from your resource pack.

Can you use both sets to play a matching pairs game?

Turn both sets of cards face down and take turns with your grown up to turn over two cards. Read the words. If the words match, they are a pair and you get to keep them both. If the words do not match put them back down. Keep going, taking turns with your grown up to find all the matching pairs. The winner is the person who has most pairs at the end.

Thursday 28th January Earls Hill Swans (Year 1) Maths

Today we are continuing to learn about 2D shapes. Please follow this link to the BBC Bitesize maths page to learn more. I’d like your child to watch the videos, play the games and then test their knowledge on the quiz at the end of the page.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zjv39j6/articles/ztpwdmn#:~:text=2D%20shapes%20have%20sides%20and,%2C%20pentagons%2C%20hexagons%20and%20octagons!

Please cut up a cereal box into different 2D shapes for your child. They will need a variety of squares, rectangles, triangles and circles. They do not need to be the same size or the same type of triangle.

Ask your child to sort the shapes and explain to you why they have chosen to sort them that way. Can they sort the shapes in a different way?

Challenge your child to use the 2D shapes to make a picture. I’d love to see photos on dojo showing sorted shapes and shape pictures.

Thursday 28th January – UTW – Science

We are thinking about the story Jack and the Beanstalk again this afternoon.

We are going to try to grow our own beanstalk.

I hope you have been able to collect your bean science kit from school?

In your kit you will have a bean seed, and a paper towel. You will need to use the plastic bag the kit came in, you will need some water and some tape.

Method

  • Wet the paper towel and put it inside the bag.
  • Put the bean on the paper towel and seal the bag.
  • Tape the bag to a sunny window.
  • The seed needs warmth to germinate and the sun should provide that. It should take 3 -5 days for the seed to germinate, although it might take a little longer than that.

Perhaps you could draw the seed every few days to keep a record of its growth?

I’d love to see photos of your little beanstalk as it grows!

Wednesday 27th January Earls Hill Swans (Year 1) Maths

On Monday and Tuesday we were learning about 3D shapes. Today we are going to learn about 2D shapes. 2D shapes are flat shapes.

Here is the teaching video.

https://vimeo.com/476288716

Here is the worksheet to accompany the video.

https://resources.whiterosemaths.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Y1-Autumn-Block-3-WO3-Recognise-and-name-2-D-shapes-2019.pdf

Please try to copy this sheet for your child to complete if you are unable to print it out.

Now watch this video. It looks at everyday 2D shapes and how to sort them.

Ask your child to find some 2D shape objects at home and sort them.

Ask them to write the following labels for their shapes.

circle

square

triangle

rectangle

Now follow this link to play an interactive shape sorting game.

Wednesday 27th January – EAD – Art and Music

We are using Jack and the Beanstalk as our basis for the art work this afternoon. We are thinking about the leaves on the beanstalk.

For both of the art activities, you will need a selection of leaves and some plain paper. To make a leaf print creation you will also need some paint and a paintbrush. To make a leaf rubbing you will need some wax crayons.

This is how to make a leaf print picture.

This video shows you how to create leaf rubbings.

If you are feeling musical this afternoon, here is the first of two music sessions based on the story ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ from the  Oak National Academy. We will post the second session next week.

Wednesday 27th January – Earls Hill Swans (Year 1) Literacy

Here is another version of the story ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’.

Today I’d like you to write some sentences from the story. Here are pictures with sentence starters for you to use.

Look at the picture with your grown up and read the sentence starter. Decide how you will finish the sentence, say it out loud and then hold the sentence in your head. Carefully write out 6 of your sentences.

Please practise your spelling words and play another Phase 4 or 5 game using this link.

Tuesday 26th January – Earls Hill Swans (Year 1) Literacy

Here is the story of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’

Today you are going to complete a reading activity I have set as a 2do on Purple Mash.

https://www.purplemash.com/

Log in again and click on the 2do tab at the top of the page. You need to work on the ‘positions’ 2do.

You will need to read the fairy tale sentences and then decide which  are the missing words needed to fill the gaps and complete the sentences.

I would also like you to practise writing out your spelling words for this week.

Then, choose at least 3 of your spelling words, and write a sentence for each of them. Remember to use a capital letter at the start of the sentences, finger spaces throughout and a full stop at the end. Make sure you try to spell all the words correctly.

Please log on and read a Bug Club book to your grown up today.
