Growth Mindset

At Holy Trinity CE Primary Academy and Nursery, we encourage children to become confident and resilient learners, allowing all children to achieve their full potential.

We know that in order to fulfill the full potential of our pupils, we need to be modelling the mindset of a learner to not be afraid of making mistakes or giving up when they find things hard, but who thrive upon them and understand that this is all part of the learning process. We want all our pupils to relish challenges, embrace their mistakes, value the importance of effort, respond carefully to feedback and take inspiration from others.

At Holy Trinity, we consistently endeavor to challenge and develop the attitudes of all pupils toward learning by considering what makes a successful learner. We have dedicated sessions in class on how we can positively approach challenges inside and outside the classroom and it’s lovely to see the school buzzing with talk of perseverance, challenge, risks, and celebrating mistakes.

Central to this attitude and approach to learning, are the theories and proven evidence of a Growth Mindset by psychologist Carol Dweck.

The theory behind Growth Mindset is based on two types of mindsets, that children and adults may possess, a ‘fixed’ mindset and a ‘growth’ mindset. Below is an overview of the traits of each:

Fixed Mindset

  • I like my work to be easy
  • I don’t like to try a challenge
  • I won’t do it
  • I can’t do it
  • I believe I cannot change how clever I am
  • I don’t like to try new things because I won’t be very good at it
  • I give up easily

Growth Mindset

  • I never give up
  • I like my work to be difficult – it means I am learning
  • I love challenges
  • How can I achieve this
  • I can do it
  • I want people to praise me for the effort I put into my work
  • I believe I can get more intelligent by working hard
  • I learn from my mistake.

We are very excited about the prospect of nurturing a growth mindset culture at Holy Trinity.

Key aspects of growth mindset at Holy Trinity:

  • We celebrate making mistakes – we can learn from them;
  • We never give up – perseverance is the key if we are to succeed;
  • We learn from each other;
  • We don’t compare ourselves with others;
  • We challenge ourselves and take risks;
  • We remember that our brains are making new connections and growing all the time.

How you can help at home:

  • Praise the amount of effort your child is putting into things rather than how clever they are;
  • Talk to your children about their brain is like a muscle – the more they use it, the stronger it gets;
  • Encourage your children to not give up if they are finding something difficult;
  • Challenge your children to try something new or challenging.

Happy New Year Clee

Happy New Year everyone!

It has been great to welcome the children back to school. They have come back after the Christmas break excited and enthusiastic. It is lovely to have a full class again!

In Literacy this week we talked about what the children had been doing during the Christmas holiday. They talked about Father Christmas/Santa, food they had eaten, presents and things they had done with their family. They drew a picture and wrote some words and captions.

In Maths we have recapped on part-whole. We talked about the parts of our body and snag head, shouldres, knees and toesThe children joined in activities to demonstrate their understanding:

Here is some of the other learning taken place:

 During LEX time some of the childen were building dens. It was a very windy day and they noticed that the wind was blowing the tarpaulin sheet. This learning was extended by the children making their own kites and then flying them. It wasn’t such a windy day and so they realised they needed to run fast to make their kite fly. Some of the Nursery children joined in this activity too:

In Picture News we learned about wind turbines. This linked in with our kite making. The children were very interested in what the wind is useful for. Following on from this we will read the story of The Little Red Hen and learn more about how wind turbines produce electricity.

Mr Carruthers brought a hedgehog to show us. He had rescued it from the road. The children talked about the hedgehog being small and prickly. Mrs Morgan is going to look after the hedgehog at home.

We talked about our half term value ‘Perseverance’. We listened to and discussed the story of the Hare and the Tortoise.

Next week we will start our new Literacy text ‘Naughty Bus’.

Each week we will learn to say ‘hello’ in a different language. Next week we will learn how to say hello in Bulgarian as there are a few children in the class who speak Bulgarian at home.

Feeling festive in Clee 🎄

We have had an exciting festive week this week.

On Monday the children had a great time decorating the Christmas tree:

In Maths we have been learning about parts and whole. Mr Cartwright has spent some time teaching the children using many different ideas. They have then continued these in small groups and independently during Maths activities time:

The special helper has been finding the next pocket in our Advent calendar and enjoying the treat they have found inside:

On Wednesday we enjoyed dressing in our Christmas jumpers, making hats to wear for our Christmas dinner, making Christmas cards and eating the delicious Christmas dinner with our friends:

Jack, Esmee and Levi enjoyed show and tell. The children are now getting really good at asking their friends questions about the show and tell items:

We have had lots of festive activities inside during LEX time and joined in many activities outside which have followed the children’s interests:

Next week for our final week we will be continuing the festive fun learning. We will also be having our Christmas party and going to church.

Our week in Clee

We have another fantastic, busy week in Clee.

As well as the learning below we have also been practising for our ‘Carols around the Tree’ concert. We are very much looking forward to performing our carol to our families.

This week our learning has included planning and making traps to catch the anteater from our focus book ‘I’m going to eat this ant’.

We finished our Literacy focus with a Beautiful Bug Ball. The children looked fantastic dressed in their bug costumes and we had a lovely day doing many craft activities, dancing, moving like bugs and finishing with some food and drinks:

Winter-Iris showed the children and Mr Morgan her minibeast home learning project:

On Tuesday we had a fantastic time with the rest of the school watching Aladdin (Oh yes we did!). The children really got involved in the pantomime by shouting the appropriate phrases, booing the baddy, dancing and singing:

On Thursday 1st December we had a parcel delivered to the classroom……it was an elf with a letter from the North Pole. The elf needed a name and so everyone wrote down what they thought the elf should be called. We put the names in a pot and drew out four. These four names were each put in a corner of the classroom and the children stood by the name they liked best. The winning name was ‘Santa Claus’.

We also started our advent calendar; each day the special helper will find the numbered pocket and get the treat inside.

We also introduced a Christmas countdown calendar which shows us how many sleeps until Christmas. We placed a counter on each day on the day from 1st to 25th December; these were then transferred onto five frames. Each day we will discuss how the five frames have changed and what we can see:

Here are some of the activities the children have been doing during LEX time:

We finished off the week by using our Advent stable and characters to tell the Christmas story:

Our week in Clee

We have had another great week this week.

In Literacy we have read to the end of our book. The children discussed the book; if they liked or did not like the story and why. In groups we talked about the story, we used illustrations to sequece the story:

In Maths we have been learning about number 5. We had to help Geraldine the Giraffe to count as she gets very muddled up. We practised making 5 using different items. We also learned about height and using the vocabulary taller and shorter:

Here are some of the activities we have been exploring during LEX time:

Thank you to all our families who came to our Minibeast Mayhem afternoon. We had a great time enjoying crafts, mini:

Poster of World Nursery Rhyme Week 2022 dates and days of the week for the featured rhymes

This week we have taken part in World Nursery Rhyme week. Each day we listened to and joined in with the Nursery rhyme. Following on from this there were many fun activities:

In Literacy we read some more of our focus book ‘I’m going to eat this Ant’. We talked about many of the words in the book beginning with the ‘s’ sound. Following this the children worked in small groups to write or draw a list of items beginning with a given sound.

In Maths we have been learning about ‘more than and fewer than. We played games using Muddles the Monkey and Geraldine the Giraffe. We had to say using a sentence which animal had more than or fewer than’ the other. The children were amazing at learning this concept:

Here are some of our LEX time activities. Again we have observed the children and extended their learning by planning fun, engaging activities:

We have already had some fabulous home learning projects brought into school. Well done to Freddie and G who talked to their friends about what they have made at home with their families.

Please bring your home learning projects in by Moday 28th November so that the children can share them with the class.

On Friday we celebrated Children in Need or ‘Pudsey Day’ as the children called it. The children looked fantastic, thank you. They showed their outfit to the class, we talked about why we dressed differently and what Children in Need is. We listened to a story about a boy who only has one leg, ate Pudsey cakes which were made by one of our parents, and joined in lots of Pudsey activities:

Next week we are having a Minibeast Mayhem afternoon (please see Class Dojo).

Have a great weekend everyone.

Our Week in Clee

What a wonderful week we’ve had in Clee.

In Maths we have been continuing our Mastering Number learning. We have been subitising and saying what we see and how we see it when looking at different items including the number 4 Numberblock:

In Literacy we introduced our focus book ‘I’m going to eat this Ant’ by Chris Naylor-Ballesteros. We looked at the front cover and the back cover and predicted what would happen; the children’s fantastic ideas were recorded on a story pathway. Our Literacy activities included rolling the dice and sounding the animal words and finding the animal in a basket. We also used the Beebots to program instructions for it to move to a picture or CVC word. We were able to say the initial sounds or blend the sounds and say the word:

Some of our LEX time activities extended the children’s interests we have observed during the week. These included making fires and then putting them out, making potions and much more:

On Friday we learned about Remembrance Day. We talked about why we wear a poppy, some of the children tried on Armed Forces uniforms, we watched a video about Remembrance Day and we observed 2 minutes silence with the rest of school:

A big thank you to everyone who sent in photos of firework displays and photos of the children and where they live.

Next week alongside our Maths and Literacy learning we will be joining in World Nursery Rhyme week. Each day we will be learning a different nursery rhyme and joining in exciting activities. The rhymes are:

  • The Big Ship Sails On the Ally Ally Oh.
  • 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Once I caugth a Fish Alive.

Our first week back in Clee

We have had a great first week back in Clee.

In Maths we have been continuing our Mastering Number learning about the composition of 3 and 4:

In Literacy we received a letter and a parcel from Denzel the Nature Detective. Denzel needed our help to find minibeasts. Inside the parcel there were items to help us to go on a minibeast hunt outside, these included magnifying glasses, checklist, paper and pens. We found many minibeasts which we took photographs and drew pictures of. Here are some photos of our minibeast hunt and our Literacy activities:

On Monday Raya brought in some cakes which her mummy had made for us to eat at snack time. They were delicious and we ate them as we listened to ‘The Room on the Broom’ by Julia Donaldson.

We have had an exciting time during our LEX time (Learning and Exploring) This is the time when the children choose their own learning and are supported by the adults. We then enhance and extend these activities:

During ‘Show and Tell’ G showed the space poster he had made, Charlie told us about how he had won at bowling and Artur and Levi showed us the different leaves they had collected:

On Thursday we had a space day. We learned about gravity, the names of the planets, dressed up as astronauts, made a space rocket and listened to a space story:

What a fantastic week!

If you are watching any firework displays we would love to see some photos please. You can send them via Dojo. We have talked about fireworks, Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder plot and firework safety with Fireman Sam.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Meddins and Mrs Owen.
