Growth Mindset
At Holy Trinity CE Primary Academy and Nursery, we encourage children to become confident and resilient learners, allowing all children to achieve their full potential.
We know that in order to fulfill the full potential of our pupils, we need to be modelling the mindset of a learner to not be afraid of making mistakes or giving up when they find things hard, but who thrive upon them and understand that this is all part of the learning process. We want all our pupils to relish challenges, embrace their mistakes, value the importance of effort, respond carefully to feedback and take inspiration from others.
At Holy Trinity, we consistently endeavor to challenge and develop the attitudes of all pupils toward learning by considering what makes a successful learner. We have dedicated sessions in class on how we can positively approach challenges inside and outside the classroom and it’s lovely to see the school buzzing with talk of perseverance, challenge, risks, and celebrating mistakes.
Central to this attitude and approach to learning, are the theories and proven evidence of a Growth Mindset by psychologist Carol Dweck.
The theory behind Growth Mindset is based on two types of mindsets, that children and adults may possess, a ‘fixed’ mindset and a ‘growth’ mindset. Below is an overview of the traits of each:
Fixed Mindset
- I like my work to be easy
- I don’t like to try a challenge
- I won’t do it
- I can’t do it
- I believe I cannot change how clever I am
- I don’t like to try new things because I won’t be very good at it
- I give up easily
Growth Mindset
- I never give up
- I like my work to be difficult – it means I am learning
- I love challenges
- How can I achieve this
- I can do it
- I want people to praise me for the effort I put into my work
- I believe I can get more intelligent by working hard
- I learn from my mistake.
We are very excited about the prospect of nurturing a growth mindset culture at Holy Trinity.
Key aspects of growth mindset at Holy Trinity:
- We celebrate making mistakes – we can learn from them;
- We never give up – perseverance is the key if we are to succeed;
- We learn from each other;
- We don’t compare ourselves with others;
- We challenge ourselves and take risks;
- We remember that our brains are making new connections and growing all the time.

How you can help at home:
- Praise the amount of effort your child is putting into things rather than how clever they are;
- Talk to your children about their brain is like a muscle – the more they use it, the stronger it gets;
- Encourage your children to not give up if they are finding something difficult;
- Challenge your children to try something new or challenging.
Happy New Year to Haughmond
Happy New Year to all children and Parents. We have started off Spring Term with determination and Perseverance already as this is our new Value this term.
Haughmond have had to work hard on their writing this week, editing and checking final drafts.
We have started off our new topic in Maths and completed History Assessments from last term.
Our new PE days will be on Tuesday and Thursday. The children have football on Tuesday with The Wright Way – so please make sure they all have outdoor kits and trainers and be prepared for muddy children!
The children now all have SATs Bootcamp logins and it is important that they use this resource regularly in preparation for SATs.
On Friday, the children finished off their houses they had been constructing and were proud of their achievements.
Finally, the children constructed pillars in preparation for learning about The Pillars of Islam.
We cannot wait for this exciting term a head and look forward to the children’s achievements throughout the term.
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Haughmond,
What another busy week we have had.
This week, the children started the week with us putting up our class tree and learning all about the meaning of Advent.
We were all lucky enough to have an amazing Christmas lunch in the dining hall, and had fun pulling our crackers and telling jokes around the table. We all looked great in our Christmas jumpers.
Our houses are developing well in technology and there will be more photographs of the development in the final week next week.
In Science and PSHE the children have been learning all about healthy diets and should be able to also tell you how much sleep they need if they are not up watching the England matches.
In music Miss Richards has been teaching music to Haughmond and they have been appraising one another’s pieces and learning to play the glockenspiels.
Next week will be the last swimming lesson and they have all achieved so much in the 10 weeks of lessons they have received.
We hope to see you all at church for the children final Christmas Service. at Holy Trinity.
Finally – congratulations to Owen who was chosen as our Values Champion for Trust this term.
Carols Around the Tree
A busy week in Haughmond.
We have had such a busy few weeks in Haughmond and the children have really been engaged in their learning.
They have absolutely loved learning how to use a saw and measuring and sawing pieces of wood to successfully build their own structures. We hope to show you our finished structures before Christmas.
The children have also been learning about harmful drugs and how dangerous they can be in PSHE and this links into our Science where the children have been learning all about circulation and the effects of drugs on their bodies.
We also had fun in RE interviewing and hot seating Freddie and Ava as Mary and Joseph in preparation for our newspaper reports.
Lots of children were actually brave enough to jump in the deep end this week and are all progressing so well with their swimming.

Open Days for children starting school in September 2023 will be on the following dates 8th, 9th and 24th November (see below). We would love the opportunity to show you around our amazing facilities and meet some of our staff. Children can start school in reception at the beginning of the academic year following their fourth birthday. Therefore, children born between 1 September 2018 and 31 August 2019 can start primary school from September 2023. Please note that the online facility is open from 2 November 2022. You must apply by 15 January 2023. Applications received after the 15th January, without exceptional reasons, are considered late. Late applications will not be processed until all the applications received on time have been allocated. This may result in your child not being offered a school place at your preferred school.
