We have been performing some amazing gymnastic movements building on our new routines as well as practising our football skills – even in such cold weather, we managed to get outside.
This week we started thinking about designing our own websites and in French have been learning how to discuss our favourite sports.
Last week in Science we had great fun constructing a model of our kidneys and learnt how the blood is filtered and how we go to the toilet.
Finally, the air ambulance needed to land on the school field. We were all lucky enough to go and have a good look at the helicopter.
We have had a brilliant first few weeks back in Long Mynd! The children have really enjoyed our new topics and we were very excited to have a visit from the Air Ambulance this afternoon!
In Art we have been experimenting with the medium of charcoal and how we can create different effects using our hands, fingers, rubbers and paintbrushes.
We have used our increasing knowledge of charcoal to create cave drawings based on cave art. The children worked on large rolls of paper and really enjoyed creating narratives through their art.
In Science we have have been looking at the human and animal skeletons. We handled different bones and learnt about the different functions our skeleton has.
We had a surprise visit from the Air Ambulance who were kind enough to let us come to have a closer look and answer our questions. The children had some really insightful questions and were very excited to see the helicopter take off!
At Holy Trinity CE Primary Academy and Nursery, we encourage children to become confident and resilient learners, allowing all children to achieve their full potential.
We know that in order to fulfill the full potential of our pupils, we need to be modelling the mindset of a learner to not be afraid of making mistakes or giving up when they find things hard, but who thrive upon them and understand that this is all part of the learning process. We want all our pupils to relish challenges, embrace their mistakes, value the importance of effort, respond carefully to feedback and take inspiration from others.
At Holy Trinity, we consistently endeavor to challenge and develop the attitudes of all pupils toward learning by considering what makes a successful learner. We have dedicated sessions in class on how we can positively approach challenges inside and outside the classroom and it’s lovely to see the school buzzing with talk of perseverance, challenge, risks, and celebrating mistakes.
Central to this attitude and approach to learning, are the theories and proven evidence of a Growth Mindset by psychologist Carol Dweck.
The theory behind Growth Mindset is based on two types of mindsets, that children and adults may possess, a ‘fixed’ mindset and a ‘growth’ mindset. Below is an overview of the traits of each:
Fixed Mindset
I like my work to be easy
I don’t like to try a challenge
I won’t do it
I can’t do it
I believe I cannot change how clever I am
I don’t like to try new things because I won’t be very good at it
I give up easily
Growth Mindset
I never give up
I like my work to be difficult – it means I am learning
I love challenges
How can I achieve this
I can do it
I want people to praise me for the effort I put into my work
I believe I can get more intelligent by working hard
I learn from my mistake.
We are very excited about the prospect of nurturing a growth mindset culture at Holy Trinity.
Key aspects of growth mindset at Holy Trinity:
We celebrate making mistakes – we can learn from them;
We never give up – perseverance is the key if we are to succeed;
We learn from each other;
We don’t compare ourselves with others;
We challenge ourselves and take risks;
We remember that our brains are making new connections and growing all the time.

Happy New Year to all children and Parents. We have started off Spring Term with determination and Perseverance already as this is our new Value this term.
Haughmond have had to work hard on their writing this week, editing and checking final drafts.
We have started off our new topic in Maths and completed History Assessments from last term.
Our new PE days will be on Tuesday and Thursday. The children have football on Tuesday with The Wright Way – so please make sure they all have outdoor kits and trainers and be prepared for muddy children!
The children now all have SATs Bootcamp logins and it is important that they use this resource regularly in preparation for SATs.
On Friday, the children finished off their houses they had been constructing and were proud of their achievements.
Finally, the children constructed pillars in preparation for learning about The Pillars of Islam.
We cannot wait for this exciting term a head and look forward to the children’s achievements throughout the term.
This week, the children started the week with us putting up our class tree and learning all about the meaning of Advent.
We were all lucky enough to have an amazing Christmas lunch in the dining hall, and had fun pulling our crackers and telling jokes around the table. We all looked great in our Christmas jumpers.
Our houses are developing well in technology and there will be more photographs of the development in the final week next week.
In Science and PSHE the children have been learning all about healthy diets and should be able to also tell you how much sleep they need if they are not up watching the England matches.
In music Miss Richards has been teaching music to Haughmond and they have been appraising one another’s pieces and learning to play the glockenspiels.
Next week will be the last swimming lesson and they have all achieved so much in the 10 weeks of lessons they have received.
We hope to see you all at church for the children final Christmas Service. at Holy Trinity.
Finally – congratulations to Owen who was chosen as our Values Champion for Trust this term.
In Hawkstone class, we have had another successful DT sewing session with our sewing helpers. This week we used our stocking template to cut around the felt, we then used our sewing skills to create the stocking using a running stitch and over stitch. Finally, we attached a bell or button to the stocking, we will finish next week.
Again thank you for all the help and support from the lovely ladies.
Don’t forget we have Carols Around The Tree next Thursday, 8th December for Nursery, Reception and KS1 – straight after school on the playground. Please join us for some festive carolling. If the children would like to bring any Christmas clothing to wear outside, such as hats, scarves, jumpers, ear muffs etc. that would be lovely but don’t worry if they haven’t.
The following Wednesday 16th December, it will be the turn of KS2, again straight after school on the playground. Please use the main path via Nursery to gain access to the playground.
We will have songbooks for you to join in and everyone is welcome.
Any questions please see your child’s class teacher.
We have had such a busy few weeks in Haughmond and the children have really been engaged in their learning.
They have absolutely loved learning how to use a saw and measuring and sawing pieces of wood to successfully build their own structures. We hope to show you our finished structures before Christmas.
The children have also been learning about harmful drugs and how dangerous they can be in PSHE and this links into our Science where the children have been learning all about circulation and the effects of drugs on their bodies.
We also had fun in RE interviewing and hot seating Freddie and Ava as Mary and Joseph in preparation for our newspaper reports.
Lots of children were actually brave enough to jump in the deep end this week and are all progressing so well with their swimming.
Another fantastic week in Hawkstone in DT with our sewing volunteers. This week we have learned how to sew buttons, pin material, and secure it with a running stitch.
Next week we will be planning our Christmas stocking with the final piece being completed Thursday 8th December.
