Monday Literacy

Today I’d like your child to start by matching up lowercase and capital letters.

On a sheet of paper, write out the alphabet using capital letters, and then rewrite it in lowercase letters. Try to mix the order of the letters up. It should look similar to this. Be careful with your letter size, I had to squeeze the last few letters in!

Ask your child to match up the letters using a line, like this.

Please talk to your child about when they should use capital letters. Remind them it is at the beginning of a sentence or for a name. Remind them about when to use full stops, exclamation marks (they know it is when something is loud or funny) or a question mark. Please copy ot these sentences for your child. Show them what each of these looks like to remind them. Explain that Mrs Allcock (or you!) got the sentences a bit wrong.  Ask them to be the teacher and to make the sentences right by using capital letters, full stops, exclamation or question marks.

On Thursday the literacy task will involve ‘ice writing’ this will need preparing in advance, which is why I am telling you now! Here are the instructions.

You will need:

  • lolly pop sticks
  • ice cube trays
  • freezer
  • food colouring
  • water

To make:

  • Pour water into the ice cube tray.
  • Add drops of colour to individual sections to make a selection of colours.
  • Put a lollipop stick into each section
  • Freeze for about 4-6 hours or overnight
  • Gently pull the sticks to remove the ice cubes from the tray
  • Protect the table with newspaper
