Order numbers up to 1,000

Using the BBC Bitesize resource here,  today we will recap ordering numbers upto 1000.

There is a slideshow to look at and then different activties to try.

If you dont have a printer you could make some of your own numbers on a sheet and then cut them out and put them in order.

Remember to look at each digit carefully when comparing numbers to order them.

If two numbers have the same number of digits we compare the largest parts of the number first to decide which number is bigger, for example:

336     or     357.

Both these numbers have hundreds, tens and ones.

H    T     O                    H      T    O

3     3     6                     3      5     7

We compare the hundreds (H) first. These are both 3, so are equal. If the digit is equal we have to compare the next digit which are the tens (T).

357 has 5 tens.

336 has 3 tens.

357 is more than 336 then as it has the same amount of hundreds but more tens.

So if we are writing them in ascending order (smallest to largest) they would look like this: 336, 357
